IPH response to UK consultation on the introduction of regulations for standardised packaging of tobacco products - 7 August 2014

In April 2012, a UK public consultation sought feedback from those with an interest in the policy of standardised packaging for tobacco products

The UK Government has not yet made a final decision on whether to introduce standardised packaging and undertook another consultation in 2014.  The purpose of the 2014 consultation is to seek the views of interested people, businesses and organisations, with a focus on gaining any additional information relevant to standardised packaging that has arisen since the 2012 consultation.

Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week: 1-7 August

Breastfeeding is an important factor to giving a child the best start in life and is central to fostering optimal health and development in the early years and helps contribute to reducing health inequalities. 

World Breastfeeding Week provides an opportunity to promote the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for further support of mothers to increase rates across the world and the island of Ireland. 

Study Finds 4 out of 5 Over 50s in Ireland are Overweight or Obese

The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) highlights the consequences of high rates of obesity for health and health service demand in the over 50s in Ireland.

Sharing experience on tobacco control at the Cancer Research UK Endgame Thinking Summit - 8 July 2014

IPH join colleagues from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland at the Cancer Research UK ‘Endgame Summit’. 

Cancer Research UK gathered together key stakeholders across government, academic research and the Smokefree Action Coalition to discuss what it will take to achieve a ‘tobacco free UK’.  IPH Director of Policy Dr Helen McAvoy presented on applying tobacco free targets in Ireland.

IPH Open Conference 2014 - don't forget proposal deadline 15 August!

Public health is greatly influenced by policy and actions in many sectors.  The 2014 Public Health Open Conference provides a platform for people from all sectors (statutory, academia, community and voluntary) to present on an area of interest to a wide audience.  Following the success of the previous Open Conferences IPH is organising a 3rd event on 14 October in Titanic Belfast.  We encourage proposals from all sectors – deadline 15 August.

Presentations now available for Irish Stakeholder Seminar on EU Joint Action on Chronic Disease

Presentations are now available from the seminar consulting with Irish stakeholders interested in chronic disease prevention which took place on Wednesday 18th June in European Union House on Dawson Street. The event will inform future work on the EU CHRODIS Joint Action  project and was jointly organised by the Irish project partners – the Institute of Public Health, Health Service Executive and European Institute of Women’s Health.

Benefits of cycling to the economy – IPH contribute to NI Assembly Inquiry

Cycling is an ideal mode of transport for short and commuter journeys, however, in Northern Ireland less than 1% of journeys under one mile are cycled. Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) and IPH jointly presented evidence to the Regional Development Committee ‘Inquiry into the benefits of cycling to the economy’ on 28 May. The presentation highlighted appropriate infrastructure is crucial to realising the economic, health and social benefits that cycling can bring. IPH stated:

IPH response to Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister 'Active Ageing Strategy 2014-2020' Consultation

Active ageing has been identified as a priority by the World Health Organization and there is now widespread consensus that measures to ensure older people remain healthy and active are a necessity rather than a luxury (World Health Organization, 2002a). IPH welcomes this opportunity to submit its views on the development of an Active Ageing Strategy 2014-20 for Northern Ireland. This submission focuses on the need to incorporate healthy ageing as a key component of the Strategy.
