A conference hosted by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) will hear today (Tuesday, 13 October 2015) that the stigma associated with attending childhood obesity treatment programmes needs to be tackled to improve uptake of such programmes.

2015 Open Access seminar hosted by IPH and RIAN - Dublin, 22 Oct 2015

Open ​Access Resources for Public Health

We would like to invite you to our Open Access seminar organised as part of the Annual International Open Access Week. Open Access Week will take place from 19 -25 October 2015. As part of this global event the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) and RIAN are hosting their Open Access Resources for Public Health title seminar at The Spencer Hotel, Thursday, 22 October 2015.

UK Scientific Advisory Commission on Nutrition (SACN) warns we need to halve our sugar intake

SACN has said free sugars should account for no more than 5% of daily energy intake - the equivalent of seven level teaspoons.  The Committee said the move was needed to "help address the growing obesity and diabetes crises and to reduce the risk of tooth decay". 

The Committee advice is in line with new World Health Organization proposals.

According to existing research, all age groups in the UK consume at least twice this limit.

IPH present evidence on 20 mph speed limit to NI Assembly Committee for Regional Development

In May IPH submitted a written response to a request from the Northern Ireland Committee for Regional Development for evidence for the need for legislation to introduce a 20mph speed limit on residential roads. This was followed up by oral evidence given by IPH and a number of other interested parties to the Committee on 17 June. A number of points highlighted by IPH included:

IPH responded to a draft consultation - Research for Better Health and Social Care: A Strategy for Health and Social Care Research and Development in Northern Ireland

In September 2014 the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety sought views on a Strategy for Health and Social Care Research and Development in Northern Ireland. The strategy sets out the DHSSPS’s commitment to support research, researchers and the use of evidence from research to improve the quality of both health and social care and for better policy-making. It describes the ambition to increase investment in R&D by competing successfully for R&D funding, with all the benefits that brings.
